Andrea's Creations & Interview:

How long have you been Upcycling/Refashioning/Recreating Clothing from thrifted textiles?
Restructuring clothing is something I have done as long as I can remember. If my jeans didn’t fit then I would rework them to look cooler. Putting shirts together to create layered looks has always been a fun project. But my all time fav was creating Halloween customs from clothing and items around the house.

How long have you been sewing?
I pretty much started seeing when I was around 10. Both of my grandmothers and mom sewed so it was inevitable.

How did you get started in Upcycling/Refashioning?
As I said before it really started as a kid recreating old designs I didn’t like anymore. But I really came back to it and started creating and selling it in 2011 when I opened my Etsy store. I was re-inspired  by Katwise and her sweater coats. All I wanted to do was make one of those coats for myself and it just went from there.

Why do you Upcycle/Refashion/Recreate clothing from thrifted textiles?
I think the thing that draws me to thrifting and up cycling clothing is the satisfaction you get from saving money and then creating a one of a kind piece of wearable art. When I walk into a thrift store and see all those clothes we just discard, I can’t imagine paying for something new, boring and manufactured. So much waste...sew many creative opportunities available for pennies, endless possibilities that call me. Too many and not enough time LOL

What type of clothing do you like to create and why?
I think my favorite type of clothing to create is fantasy. I guess the Halloween aspect of creating clothing that transforms us into magical beings always guides my mind and fingers. I think creating wearable designs filled with magical colors and lines allows us to tap into our inner fairy, bohemian princess, Goddess...the possibilities are endless.

What is your favorite textile to Upcycle/Refashion/Recreate from? and why?
Oh that’s too hard to nail down...hmmm, maybe jeans, but I love EVERYTHING. I just can’t even begin to get it down to one fav. Jeans, sweaters, tshirts ahhhhhhhhh..oh my!

What was your favorite project?
I don’t think I have any one. However, my favorite projects were transforming sweatshirts into fairy hoodies.

I like to describe my Upcycling as:
Wow, this is honestly a loaded question because I am truly eclectic. I like what I like depending on how I am feeling that day. I have always been wishy-washy when it comes to my designs. I can make just about anything from couture clothing all the way to apocalyptic grunge. It’s just more fun to play it by ear which allows me
to have a creative vibe always flowing.
